Politics and the English Language Question
Question 1: George Orwell argues against the “belief that language is a natural growth and an instrument which we shape for own purposes”. Explain why you do or do not agree with Orwell’s position.
I agree with Orwell’s position because I believe that words are so easily manipulated and that the ambiguity of words makes them more vulnerable. Words are heavily reliant on popularity. A word has a definite meaning when it is commonly accepted within people, and I feel that people easily manipulate this for the benefit of themselves or to change a situation. Common terms in language can be dressed to mean more than they actually do, and this creates an effect that distorts the reality of the circumstance.
